How to Make Paper Plate Butterflies

How cute is this paper plate butterfly craft for Oriental Trading? When I saw these beautiful floral paper plates I knew I wanted to make a spring craft with them, and I thought the flowers and addition of sparkly pom-poms was a fun spin on paper plate butterflies.

It’s a simple kids craft that is great for all ages, and could make a cute Mother’s Day gift too. You could add magnets on the back, or insert one or two into a flower bouquet! They would even make pretty present toppers. Or what about a wall of these in a child’s bedroom? The options are endless!

Any patterned paper plate would work great for this craft. You can get creative with the mix of embellishments such as pom-poms, adhesive jewels or stickers. I used colored craft sticks for the butterfly body but you could always decorate regular craft sticks with paint or markers. You can find all the supplies I used here.

I am such a butterfly lover, and this is the best time of year to see butterflies in our backyard. I’ve already spotted several monarchs and a swallowtail around my flowers! Sometimes we’ll have a big butterfly migration come through San Antonio that literally fills the air with butterflies, but no signs of one yet this year.

If you too are a butterfly lover, I have some crafts you may enjoy that use realistic feather butterflies. Check out my butterfly wreath and butterfly balloons!
