Designing a Nursery or Kids Room? Let Me Help! (Chicago)

Are you in the process of setting up a nursery, moving your toddler to a “big boy / girl room”, or carving out a space for a playroom? If so, I would love to help you with the design. I am a mom of two little girls who had a blast designing their rooms and would love to gain more design experience by helping other moms. I have a knack for piecing together one-of-a-kind rooms on the cheap – by incorporating Craigslist, Etsy, and DIY pieces. If you are on a budget but want a room that is uniquely you, without spending Land of Nod or Pottery Barn Kids prices, this is what I would provide:

1. A one-on-one consultation to assess the look and feel of the room you want, the space and budget you have to work with, and existing pieces you want to incorporate

2. A “mood board” similar to below that includes ideas for all aspects of the room (bedding, furniture, accessories, paint colors, etc.) that fit within your budget

3. A “treasure hunt” for specific pieces on Craigslist, Etsy, retailer clearance, etc. that I think would be a great fit for your room (I send you the link with my suggestions on how the piece could work, you decide whether or not to buy it)

As I’m just looking to get my feet wet (and have some fun), I would provide the above for a flat fee (assume I would invest about 10 hours total time). I help you bring your ideas/concept of your room to life, but you do the execution (purchasing, painting, etc.). DIY projects to further complete your room such as furniture refinishing, artwork, etc. could be offered for an additional fee.

It was a shot in the dark to see if I could maybe do the design stuff I love for other people.  Well, I actually got a response to my ad!  Just one response, but that was all I needed… I was pumped!  Michele, a Chicago mom of a 7 year old Beckett was anxious to do something about his bedroom…she hadn’t changed it much since it was his nursery and the she knew the time had come when her son had started taking pictures off the wall because they were “too babyish.”  Michele wanted to do a full revamp of furniture, paint, accessories, etc. but didn’t know where to start.  Well, bless her heart for being willing to give me a shot!

I was able to meet them both in person at their house for the initial ‘design consultation’ and boy is Beckett the coolest 7 year old I’ve ever met.  His interests range from sports, to cowboys, to Reggae music, to art and he and his mom wanted all these reflected in his room.  One other very specific design mandate Beckett gave me for his room:  he wanted it painted red and green because “green” reminded him of sports and “red” reminded him of music!  (I was thinking…are you sure it doesn’t remind you of Christmas?!).

Anyway, Beckett’s eclectic interests and red and green color palette made for one hefty challenge for my first ‘professional’ design project, but I ended up having a blast and leaving them happy clients at the end.  Enough of my blabbing… I’ll show you what I actually did in my next post.
